Winter sunrise on Waskesiu Lake, Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan. If the photo looks familiar, it was used as the cover image for the Winter 2021 issue of Prairies North Magazine, and was part of an article we did for the publication on the Joys of Winter Photography

While this was another year of restricted travel thanks to Covid, we still managed to get out and about for outdoor photography, mostly fairly close to home. This year we paid a lot more attention to photographing in the winter, as well as spending more time photographing at night. The following are 21 of our favourite new shots from this year:

Vermilion Lakes, Banff National Park, Alberta
Vermilion Lakes, Banff National Park, Alberta. This photo and the following one on another part of this series of lakes, were taken only about 20 minutes apart when the light was changing rapidly.

Lightning, Tyrrell Lake
Thunder Storm on Tyrrell Lake, Saskatchewan. This shot was about 40 minutes after the previous photo on Tyrrell Lake. It was a changeable evening, going from overcast to the sun breaking through the clouds briefly at sunset to a thunderstorm shortly after.
CPR Bridge, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
The CPR Bridge across the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. For this type of shot, the colder the weather the better. It was minus 30 degrees in early February, with huge clouds of fog caused by the mixing of the cold air and relatively warm ice-free part of the river. The rising sun turns the fog a rich golden colour.
Saskatoon riverbank in winter
Frosty trees along the Meewasin Trail in Saskatoon, also during extreme cold weather.

South Saskatchewan River
A section of the South Saskatchewan River known as the Loop. The river flows east from Alberta into Saskatchewan then loops back into Alberta for a short distance then once again turns east into Saskatchewan. The island near the top of frame is on the Fourth Meridian which marks the border between the two provinces.

Full moon over St. John the Baptist Church, Smuts, Saskatchewan. On an upcoming blog, we’ll get into detail on how to vary the apparent size of the moon in your photographs.

Good Spirit Lake, Saskatchewan
Sandbars off the beach at Good Spirit Lake, Saskatchewan. The lake level was low this year, revealing many artistic looking formations in the shallow water.
Fall colours, Saskatchewan
Forest floor in the Narrow Hills, Saskatchewan. It was the beginning of fall colour season with some plants changing colour while others were still green, resulting in an especially vibrant mixture in a small area. Not all landscape photos have to be grand vistas.
Reflection of fall colours, Anglin Lake, Saskatchewan.

Fall colour reflections, Thickwood Hills, Saskatchewan
Fall colour reflections in the Thickwood Hills, Saskatchewan. Unlike the previous photo where all of the reflection came from trees on the lake shore, here the trunks of aspen trees are in the water. The trees were flooded when water level rose in the wetland a few years ago. The reflected colour is from foliage in trees on the nearby shore.

    1. Jean – We’re so pleased that you enjoyed seeing our favourites from this year. Like you, we are looking forward to new places and scenes to photograph in the coming year. Happy New Year to you and yours.

  3. Certainly makes me want to explore these spots. I pretty sure I see a dragon emerging out of the sandbars at Good Spirit!

    1. Thanks for your comments Donna. The way those sandbars looked this year I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a dragon lurking somewhere.
