Ten Favourite New Wildlife Photos from 2016 January 3, 2017January 24, 2021 Robin Mother and cub spotted hyena, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Even hyenas can be cute when they’re young, at least this mother seemed to think so as she nuzzled her recently born cub. Their den was right beside the road, so we were able to photograph from inside our car. While hyenas seem dog-like in many ways, their offspring are curiously called cubs rather than pups. The Intimidator, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Several white-backed vultures had found a dead baby rhino which they started eating. Then a larger lappet-face vulture flew in and strutted up with his wings extended to intimidate the other vultures which kept their distance. Vulture fight, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Two white-backed vultures having a serious battle over who has priority at a feeding site. Wilson’s snipe, Reed Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. These mottled-looking birds are usually well camouflaged in the vegetation and usually fly off quickly when discovered. It was nice to find this cooperative individual sitting on a fence post. Horned grebe, Chaplin Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. These elegant-looking birds are at their best during the spring mating season. Beaver, Thickwood Hills, Saskatchewan, Canada. We found this guy walking on the road near our farm in the Thickwood Hills. While beaver are plentiful, it’s not common to see them in the open during the day, and practically posing for a photo. Elk Battle, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. During the fall rut, male elk often clash to establish dominance. These two were similar in size so the sparring went on for some time. Bull Elk, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. While we able to get several photos of bull elk walking around, we liked this one of an elk lying down because it emphasized his enormous set of antlers. Lion, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Of all the lions we saw in Kruger Park, this big guy with a flowing black mane seemed to best fit the King of Beasts description. Happy baby, Kruger National Park, South Africa. This recently born baboon seemed to be the quintessential happy baby, giggling with delight.
