Heading the list of our top wildlife photos this year was walking with wolves at the Northern Lights Wolf Centre near Golden, BC, which we devoted a detailed article to earlier called Changing our Relationship with the Big Bad Wolf. It was a rare opportunity to capture so much fascinating wolf activity at close quarters and in a wild setting.
Another highlight was visiting Jasper National Park in the fall which is the best place in the country to photograph the elk rut. Jasper has a range of other critters as well, and we did an article on Why Jasper National Park Tops our List for Wildlife Photography.
Closer to home, it was mostly about birds to round off the wildlife photo high points. Here are 10 of our favorites.
Flora the Wolf, Northern Lights Wolf Centre near Golden, BC.Flora the wolf, running.Bull elk bugling in Jasper National Park.Profile of bull elk in Jasper National Park..Pika gathering food, Jasper National Park.Lift off of thousands of snow geese, Saskatchewan. For this shot I decided to zoom into one section of the large flock to show the organized chaos of so many birds flying in close proximity.Bald eagle in flight, Saskatchewan.Black tern about to dive into the water after food, Saskatchewan.Western kingbird, Saskatchewan. These flycatchers sometime hover in the air for a second or so before diving down to their prey, so this usually the best time to capture them in flight.Yellow-bellied sapsucker coming out of its nest, Saskatchewan.
