Today we look back at our photo adventures from 2019 and pick out 19 of our favourite new landscape images. It was an eventful year, starting with parts of South Africa in the winter, a road trip along the north shore of Lake Superior and a northern Saskatchewan canoe trip in summer, heading to Montana and parts of the Canadian Rockies in the fall, then a recent trip to the area around Phoenix, Arizona. It certainly isn’t always necessary to travel far for photography – we got a few of our favourite shots close to home in Saskatchewan.
Lake Superior
Lake Superior shore in Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, Ontario. This wonderful spot was almost next to where we camped. The evening was cloudy and it looked like rain, but just before sunset the sun peeked through with this magical light.Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, near Thunder Bay, Ontario. The second highest waterfall in Ontario, after Niagara. With several vantage points on both sides, and on top near the brink, it’s a great place to play around with different angles and settings, such as here with a 3-second exposure.Top of the Giant Hike, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, near Thunder Bay, Ontario. This was the undisputed highlight of our wanderings around Lake Superior. A fairly tiring 23 km return hike took us to the top of the famous Sleeping Giant formation where we gazed down into this spectacular canyon with vertical cliffs, with a Lake Superior backdrop.Inukshuk and full moon at Rock Island Lodge, near Wawa, Ontario.
South Africa

Both this and the previous image were mere steps from our cabin in the park.Woody Cape, Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. The park has two parts – the main area a bit inland where we find elephants and a wide range of African wildlife, plus these spectacular coastal dunes. We spent a few hours hiking around here one day and had the place to ourselves.The cliffs near Arniston, South Africa. This spot is near the southern tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet. The local fishermen do much of their fishing in the turbulent waters off the rugged cliffs.Robberg Nature Reserve, near Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. A wonderful hiking trail winds through the Robberg Peninsula, with rugged cliffs and fine sand beaches.
Saskatchewan

Montana and Canadian Rockies

We had a lot of clouds and rain during our visit, but without rain, there are no rainbows.Takakkaw Falls, Yoho National Park, British Columbia. At 384 metres, this is the highest waterfall in the Rockies and the second highest anywhere in Canada.Kicking Horse River, Yoho National Park, British Columbia. A 15-second exposure of the river just before it drops into the Natural Bridge rock formation.
Phoenix, Arizona
